History - Local

When: 2nd Friday of the month from 14.00 – 16.00
Where: Member's home. This unfortunately limits the numbers we can welcome into the group - and so we do have a waiting list.
Each year we decide democratically on a particular area of local history to research, and members of the group then agree on which aspects of the overall theme they each wish to focus on. Each person does their own research and presents their findings at one of our meetings.
The meetings are informal and relaxed, and we all chip in with any information we have relevant to the topic. This leads to friendly discussions around the theme, which are often anecdotal as much as research-based - members draw on and share their own experience and knowledge.
Our members make good use of the resources at the Croydon Central Library Archives - as well as searching on the internet, reading books and using their own knowledge of our area. We do not confine our research exclusively to the history of Croydon but sometimes look at nearby areas. We organise 2 or 3 visits each year, to places of interest linked to our current theme.
Past themes have included: Transport; Education in Croydon; Croydon’s industrial past; Blue Plaques in our area - and many more.
We are currently full, but if you find local history interesting, please get in touch and we will put you on the waiting list. Contact the Group Leader
